Groundwater Remediation – What is it?
Remediation is the “clean up” and removal of contaminants from soil or water sites. Unfortunately, oil tanks can rust and leak over time, contaminating groundwater and creating an environmental hazard. Property owners are required by the State of NJ to address the contamination in compliance with the NJDEP groundwater remediation standards.
Groundwater Investigation and Remediation
Groundwater is water held underground or that collects below the surface and fills the spaces in underground materials. If the levels of a collected sample are above NJDEP Groundwater Standards, it needs to be immediately addressed to prevent further environmental hazards. The treatment plan will depend on the extent and depth of the contamination.
Most often, groundwater remediation will consist of either:
- Extracting the water from the ground, treating it and returning it to the soil.
- Pumping it into a removal truck and disposing of it at the appropriate facility.
